WHAT IS Single Pair Ethernet?

Single Pair Ethernet (SPE) provides the necessary infrastructure for the Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT). With SPE, Ethernet can communicate from the cloud to the field level in a space- and cost-efficient way for the first time.

Single Pair Ethernet (SPE) describes the transmission of Ethernet via only one pair of copper wires. In addition to data transmission via Ethernet, SPE also enables simultaneous power supply to end devices via PoDL - Power over Data Line. Until now, two pairs of copper wires were necessary for Fast Ethernet (100MB) or four pairs of copper wires for Gigabit Ethernet. SPE now opens up completely new possibilities and fields of application for industrial Ethernet.

Single Pair Ethernet enables the IIoT. To advance Single Pair Ethernet, seven technology leaders have joined forces in 2019. HARTING, TE Connectivity, HIROSE, Würth Electronics, Bizlink, MURR Elektronik and Softing form the founding members of the SPE Industrial Partner Network. Within a very short time, many more have followed and we already count more than 50 member companies.

For the reliable establishment of the entire future SPE ecosystem, standards for transmission protocols, cabling and device components are also jointly supported. Therefore, all members of the partner program, as well as the ISO/IEC JTC 1/SC 25/WG 3, are in close exchange and intensive cooperation with IEEE 802.3 and IEC SC46C for uniform transmission standards and copper data cables.

Single pair ethernet TECHNOLOGy

Single Pair Ethernet allows the barrier-free connection of field devices, sensor/actuator technology and much more. The field level becomes smart and thus reduces the effort for parameterisation, initialisation and programming. The construction, operation and maintenance of systems becomes more efficient and cost-effective. For the first time, Ethernet can communicate space- and cost-efficiently from the cloud to the field level.

Single pair ethernet STANDARDS

Industrial Ethernet via just one wire pair, known as Single Pair Ethernet (SPE), is becoming more and more popular. Several company cooperations offer solutions on the market for SPE, which makes it clear that there are several standard proposals for SPE mating faces. There is only one standardized industrial interface, which is the only solution internationally defined for cabling standards and transmission standards. This is where our technology and standards come into play.

Single pair ethernet USE CASES

In this informative article we present possible use cases for Single Pair Ethernet. Case studies illustrate the advantages of SPE with the help of exemplary test setups. Those interested in SPE and future users will learn how significantly SPE contributes to the rapid success of the Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT).

In order to make SPE an enabler of the smart field level and the IIoT, a uniform infrastructure is required as well as device components that coordinate with each other and function. Based on a uniform and standardized infrastructure of cables and interfaces, device and chip developers start their work. Only when the networking of the devices is securely guaranteed do they have the necessary security to invest in a completely new market.

Single Pair Ethernet FAQ

What is Single Pair Ethernet?

Single Pair Ethernet (SPE) describes Ethernet transmission via a single copper cable pair. In addition to data transmission via Ethernet, Single Pair Ethernet (SPE) also supports the simultaneous power supply of the end devices via PoDL (Power over Data Line). Until now, this required two pairs for Fast Ethernet (100 MB) and four pairs for Gigabit Ethernet. SPE now opens up completely new deployment options and applications for Industrial Ethernet as well as IIoT.

Where is Single Pair Ethernet used in industrial applications?

Ethernet has gained the upper hand in industrial networks. Starting at the enterprise level, Ethernet has conquered the automation pyramid level by level - through the operational and process level down to the control level. Traditionally, the last level of the automation pyramid, the field level, is connected via various BUS systems, which is due to the granularity of the branches and the large number of devices in the field level. Hundreds to thousands of sensors and actuators in production are connected via an extensive cable periphery. In addition, gateways and converters are always needed to translate data from the two worlds. Explore some Single Pair Ethernet use cases in this article.

Why do classic ethernet and bus systems reach their limits in modern, industrial applications?

The demand for a more efficient infrastructure at field level has increased considerably. More and more sensors require transmission rates that overtax BUS systems. In addition, it is becoming apparent that classic Ethernet infrastructure is too cost-intensive, oversized and complex for many field applications. These observations are equally true for cables, connectors and device components. Industrial applications in the age of Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) and Industry 4.0 require a slim, lightweight and yet powerful Ethernet infrastructure.

What are the advantages of Single Pair Ethernet in industrial applications?

The industry has discovered the advantages of slim cabling with single pair Ethernet and wants to use it for a wide variety of application scenarios. Single Pair Ehternet (SPE) enables the barrier-free connection of field devices, sensors and actuators in automation. The field level is becoming smart, SPE is becoming a decisive advantage for IIoT and the Smart Factory. The construction, operation and maintenance of production plants become more efficient and economical. For the first time, Ethernet can communicate from the cloud to the field level.

Will existing ethernet infrastructures be displaced by Single Pair Ethernet?

Experts do not assume this. According to the current status of development and standardisation, SPE transmits 1 GBit/s up to a distance of 40 metres, whereas 8-core Ethernet transmits up to 100 metres. Numerous interfaces and devices would also have to be upgraded. Single pair Ethernet is used where gains can be realised through significant space and weight savings, e.g. in the railway industry. Here, reduced weight equates to significantly reduced costs.

Which industry standards are relevant for Single Pair Ethernet?

At the beginning of 2020, IEC 63171-6, the first globally valid standard for SPE connections in industrial applications, was published and adopted by all important standards committees. The comprehensive standard contains the necessary descriptions and test sequences for simple and reliable implementation. We provide a detailed overview of standards in a special article.

What are the main advantages of Single Pair Ethernet?
  • Open communication tool: No dependence on manufacturer or software.

  • Enabler for the Industrial Ethernet of Things (IIoT): Barrier-free communication from the sensor to the cloud.

  • Higher efficiency: Cost-efficient due to higher packing density and higher flexibility due to weight savings.

  • Standardised interface for planning security: No proprietary solution. Possible exchange of components through standardisation according to IEC 63171-6.

  • Real-time communication with TSN: Full control over your sensitive safety data.

  • UP TO 1 GBIT/S for automation networks: Enables large data sensors in the field level.

  • PODL - Power over Data Line: Data and up to 50W power over a twisted pair.

  • Hybrid solution for data and power: Power levels beyond PoDl 24V to 96W and 48V to 392W.
